The Pakistan Stock Exchange's headline equity gauge is a composite measure of many listed companies, weighted so that larger firms carry more influence than smaller ones. It is not a price you can buy. It is a ratio: each reading expresses the current total value of its constituents against the value of that same basket at a chosen base date. That base is set to a round reference level so the index can be read as a simple percentage change over time, which is why the figure looks large and abstract rather than like a share price.
For a reader, the gauge is a direction indicator for the whole market. When it rises, the weighted majority of its members are gaining; when it falls, the broad market is losing ground. It answers a single question: how is the listed market doing overall?
- Use it to gauge the general mood of the market rather than to value any single company.
- Compare its movement across periods to see whether the broad market is expanding or contracting.
- Treat it as context, not as a signal for your own holdings.
- Remember that a handful of heavy constituents can pull the reading in a direction that many smaller members do not share.
The limits matter. A composite gauge says nothing about the shares you actually own, their dividends, their liquidity or their specific risks. A portfolio can fall while the index rises, and the reverse. The reading is a summary of the market, not a verdict on your holdings, and it is no substitute for looking at the individual companies you hold.
How the KSE-100 Index works
The KSE-100 Index is a market-wide index: it follows the listed shares as a group, not one company.
Its level is a ratio to a base date, so it shows the direction of the market over time, not the price of a single share.
Constituents, weights and reviews are set and announced by the exchange; read them on the official PSX pages below.
